Teacher’s Pet

A polished little charmer with a good memory, neat handwriting, and just enough mischief to stay interesting.

Some cocktails swagger into the room.
This one raises its hand politely — then quietly steals the scene.

The Teacher’s Pet is an autumn-tinged, book-lined beauty: rich, amber, and knowing, like the last golden hour in an old library. It borrows a little from the Old Fashioned school of thought, but adds an apple-kissed wink that feels entirely its own. Think bourbon’s warm embrace, a touch of apple brandy, bitters for backbone, and the bright flourish of orange and cherry on top.

If the Vesper Martini is all sleek espionage and sharp tailoring, the Teacher’s Pet is its clever cousin — less casino, more study hall after dark. Still elegant. Still seductive. Just with better notes.

It’s the sort of drink that suggests leather-bound books, half-finished notebooks, and the dangerous possibility that the smartest one in the room may also be the most fun.

Teacher’s Pet Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz Crown Royal
  • ½ oz Okanagan apple brandy or French Calvados
  • ¼ oz demerara syrup or maple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Ice
  • Orange peel
  • 2 brandied or maraschino cherries

Method
Add the bourbon, apple brandy, syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.
Stir until well chilled and silky.
Strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass.
Garnish with an orange peel and two cherries.

Tasting Notes

Smooth, warming, and quietly complex, Teacher’s Pet begins with caramel and oak, then drifts into apple orchard territory with a citrusy lift at the finish. It’s smartly balanced — not too sweet, not too stern. The kind of cocktail that would never show off, even though it absolutely could.

Why We Love It

Because some drinks are all show, and some have substance.
This one has both.

It feels like September.
Like sharpened pencils, fresh ambitions, and the thrill of a new chapter.
A cocktail for readers, romantics, overachievers, and anyone who ever brought an apple to class hoping for extra credit.
